Two champions take home the gold at the coolest race in the world, the North Pole Marathon. Runners compete on the frozen Arctic sea ice, located just 49 kilometers (30 miles) from the top of the world. Camp Barneo, otherwise known as the North Pole Camp, is set up every year from scratch, and serves as a base for excursions to the Pole. The camp is constantly moving as northerly winds push the floating camp towards the southeast. Czech Republic's Petr Vabrousek and Heather Hawkins of Australia won the men and women's division, with Vabrousek's time an impressive 4 hours, 22 minutes and 24 seconds. Vabrousek has now completed the "Polar double" as he has also won the Antarctic Ice Marathon in 2013. SOUNDBITE: Petr Vabrousek, North Pole Marathon winner, saying (English): "It was very, very tough, far away from real running, it was more squatting through the deep snow but an amazing experience." Hawkins won with a time of 6 hours, 57 minutes and 39 seconds. SOUNDBITE: Heather Hawkins, North Pole Marathon winner, saying (English): "Ah, that's unreal, what a run. That was really special, an amazing race." Competitors have to complete 12 laps of the course with markers guiding the runners in the snow and ice. Conditions for this year's race were near perfect at the start with low winds and sunshine and a race time temperature of minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 Fahrenheit), but as the race progressed, the weather grew increasingly worse. Several competitors were taken out of the race, suffering from hypothermia. Fifty competitors from 19 countries pitted themselves against the extreme elements, with temperatures hitting minus 41 degrees Celsius ( minus 41.8 Fahrenheit).
