Their expressions tell SOME of the story. Nearly 550 sub-Saharan migrants -- among them women and children -- being taken to the Italian port city of Salerno after their rescue at sea. Weakened by their journey, some have to be carried off the boat. They'll be divided into small groups and taken to reception centers across Italy -- to ease the overcrowded migrant shelters in Sicilian ports. They are the latest of thousands who've arrived recently...as public outrage simmers over the deaths of some 900 migrants who perished at sea on Sunday when their boat capsized in the Mediterranean. Now, the European Union is under pressure to act. EU leaders are to meet for a crisis summit in Brussels -- to discuss boosting search and rescue operations and to step up the fight against migrant traffickers. They've reversed last year's decision to scale down such operations in the Mediterranean and observers say they could very well double the cash and equipment available to EU border patrol missions. Their area of operations, too, could be extended, allowing EU ships to more quickly locate migrant boats in trouble off the North African coast. Among other proposals the European Council will discuss.... a military mission to capture and destroy the traffickers' boats -- before they become potential death traps for thousands more migrants seeking a better life in Europe.
