Staff on a German frigate in the Mediterranean, checking migrants just rescued from their rickety boat. More than 200 migrants were plucked to safety from their vessel after it went adrift somewhere between the Libyan and Italian coasts. Among them, 34 women, two of whom are pregnant, and three children. They're just some of the roughly 420 migrants rescued by German military ships in these waters since Friday. (SOUNDBITE) (German) SPOKESPERSON FOR THE COMMANDER OF THE GERMAN TASK FORCE, ALEXANDER GOTTSCHALK, SAYING: "As navy officers, this is our profession, a job we know to do. And as sailors, this is a duty, a moral duty, to help people at sea." The migrants were taken to the Italian port of Reggio Calarbria. That's where they'll get some food, blankets and care, before their transfer to Italian authorities. The European Union is scrambling to address the growing migrant crisis in the Mediterranean ... after 8 or even 9-hundred people perished at sea last month in a single shipwreck. The worst Mediterranean shipwreck in living memory did little to stem the flow .... as the numbers of people risking the journey in search of a better life has only increased in recent weeks.
