Forbes lists sports knock-out earners

Floyd ''Money'' Mayweather lived up to the hype of his own nickname topping the latest edition of Forbes list of the World's 100 Highest-Paid Athletes. As Hayley Platt reports the magazine says the Las Vegas boxer earning $300 million last year almost doubling the number two on the list -- his defeated opponent Manny Pacquiao.

When US boxer Floyd Mayweather beat Manny Pacquiao in May, he became a sporting champion and a knock-out earner - winning himself $240million dollars. He's now the world's highest paid man in sport, according to Forbes rich list of top 100 athletes. Kurt Badenhausen is the magazine's editor. (SOUNDBITE) (English) KURT BADENHAUSEN, SENIOR EDITOR AT FORBES, SAYING: "I think it's pretty safe bet as soon as Pacquiao and Mayweather agreed to fight that Floyd Mayweather would be the highest paid athlete in the world this year. It's the third time in four years he's been on top of the list, but the money is just staggering." Last year the Las Vegas boxer earnt $300 million, almost twice as much as Pacquiao, who was second on the rich list. He's a shrewd businessman - as a co-producer of the fight he snatched 60 percent of the purse. Both boxers join Tigers Woods as the only athletes to earn nine-figures in a single year. (SOUNDBITE) (English) KURT BADENHAUSEN, SENIOR EDITOR AT FORBES, SAYING: "The world's highest paid athletes are making more than ever. The top-100 earned $3.2 billion over the last 12 months -- that's up 17% from the prior year." The biggest event in sport is the Super Bowl. Last year it generated $500 million in ticket sales, tv and concessions. Only a few women made the top 100 list. Tennis stars Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams came 26th and 47th.
