Rachel Dolezal has resigned. The president of Spokane's NAACP branch recently came under intense scrutiny after questions emerged about her racial identity. SOUNDBITE: RACHEL DOLEZAL, SPOKANE NAACP PRESIDENT, SAYING: "Would you identify yourself as an African American? Actually, I don't like the term African American I prefer black. So if asked I would say yes I consider myself to be black." In a statement posted on the chapter's Facebook page on Monday, Dolezal said, "It is with complete allegiance to the cause of racial and social justice and the NAACP that I step aside from the Presidency and pass the baton to my Vice President." Last week, a Caucasian couple who identified themselves as Dolezal's biological parents said she had falsely claimed she's black. SOUNDBITE: RUTHANNE DOLEZAL, MOTHER, SAYING: "Our daughter is primarily German and Czech and of European descent." "So, she's white?" "She's white." In announcing her resignation, Dolezal said she had remained quiet through the controversy out of respect for the work of the NAACP.
