Putin on Ukraine: "Let's work together"

Russia's Putin blames West and U.S. for Ukraine crisis, saying West should put pressure on Kiev to help resolve it adding, ''Let's work together.'' Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

Few signs of quiet in eastern Ukraine as residents survey the damage after overnight shelling. Against this back drop Russian President Vladimir Putin is calling on the West to put pressure on Kiev to end the fighting between pro-Russian separatist groups and the Ukraine military. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING: "It's being repeated like mantra that Russia should use its influence on Ukraine's south-east. We do influence it, but it is impossible to resolve this issue only through our influence on Ukraine's south-east region. The influence should be applied on current official authorities in Kiev. And we cannot do this. This is the path our western partners - Europeans and Americans - should embark upon . Let's work together." Putin says Moscow is ready to apply its influence in Ukraine's pro-Russian east to find a compromise But on the ground, the warring parties are accusing each other of increasing attacks in recent weeks. And International monitors are warning that a bigger flare-up could be imminent. More than 6,200 people have been killed since fighting broke out in April 2014 -- when pro-Russian rebels opposed to a new pro-Western government declared independence from Kiev.
