Ventimiglia, Italy - it's the end of the line for the mostly African migrants stranded here since France closed the border. On Saturday migrants and local residents from both sides of the border joined forces in a protest to demand its re-opening. (SOUNDBITE)(French) LOCAL RESIDENT, VALERIE, SAYING: "It's important to be here today because we don't agree with France's decision to shut the border. The people who are here didn't ask to be here. They would have preferred to stay in their own country if they hadn't faced repression and if they had everything they needed to live in their country, so we're here to support them." France says the migrants are Italy's responsibility. Italy says the European Union must do more to help. The migrants, many hoping to reach northern Europe, can only wait and see what happens next. (SOUNDBITE)(English) UNIDENTIFIED MIGRANT FROM ETHIOPIA SAYING: "I've been sitting here for five days, five days I sit at the border of this area." Official estimates put the number of migrants arriving in Italy at 57, 000 so far this year as the country looks to the E.U. for help to cope with the influx.
