With summer heat gripping Europe, zoo residents in the UK, Italy and Spain are kicking back and chilling out as they cool off with tasty frozen treats. In England, tiger cubs enjoyed dipping their paws into a pool of cold water, and a polar bear swam in a lake. Keepers froze fishy treats inside ice blocks for the penguins and gave chimps orange ice lollies. In Rome, the animals welcomed any relief they could get, with temperatures hitting 35 degrees Celsius, or 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The zoo's orangutans snacked on icicles made with yogurt and fruit. Brown bears in thick coats lounged in the pool while having iced melons chucked at them. Keepers make sure the animals get the frozen goodies and fresh water all summer long. Meanwhile in Madrid, zoo handlers were throwing frozen fish and fruit ice blocks into enclosures for the bears and otters. Weather forecasts predict that July 3 will be the peak of the current heatwave in Italy, with temperatures reaching around 39 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit), while hot winds from Africa are set to sweep across Spain, ushering in the second heatwave of the summer that's expected to last for nine days.
