Once a promised land for thousands of Albanians seeking better life, Greece's crisis casts doubt on the future of its migrant workers. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

Greece, once a promised land for thousands of Albanians seeking better life -- Now the debt crisis casts is casting doubt on the future of its migrant workers. These workers are heading home -- facing an uncertain future. (SOUNDBITE) (Albanian) MIGRANT WORKER RETURNING FROM GREECE, RIZA MUSTA, SAYING: "If they (Greeks) are finished, we are done, zero. We're workers, so if they won't have work for us, we have no other hope. We depend on them: if they have work, there will be work for us." Since communism fell in 1990, Greece has drawn some 600,000 migrant workers from Albania. Now a reversal of fortune, with banks shuttered and Greek lawmakers scrambling to make a deal. This worker says it all depends on the Germans. (SOUNDBITE) (Albanian) MIGRANT WORKER RETURNING FROM GREECE, KRISTAQ GJORDUMI, SAYING: "It depends on Miss Merkel, it all depends on the great Madame." With Greece losing its appeal, some 16,000 Albanians have sought asylum in Germany in the first five months of the year.
