The Syrian army, backed by Lebanon's Shi'ite militia Hezbollah, has advanced deeper into the rebel-held city of Zabadani. The advance comes two weeks into a campaign to capture it from insurgents, a move considered crucial to consolidate government-held areas linking Lebanon and Syria. Although the city was mostly deserted, rebels said some 500 families were still inside. In this video uploaded to a social media website, a man is asked by the cameraman if anything is behind the rubble they are clearing. He replies, "Yes, a boy, woman and a girl." Capturing the city would be a strategic gain for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose army is battling groups on several other fronts. It would also secure a corridor for Hezbollah to transport fighters and arms across the border.
