EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: RESENDING TO CORRECT AUDIO Rough cut (No reporter narration). STORY: Speaking at the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC, Senator McCain acknowledged recent comments by GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump that he did not view McCain as a war hero because he had been captured. Trump also said McCain had not done enough to help America's veterans. While not mentioning Trump by name or directly addressing Trump's claims, the Arizona senator said he's worked hard to serve veterans of the Vietnam War. "When this whole issue just came up that obviously I've been engaged in, I do not want to reopen the wounds of the war," said McCain. "No matter what this, how this present controversy plays out, I'd like to make sure that whatever happens that we maintain the respect and affection, appreciation for those who served a long time ago," McCain said. The senator said that Vietnam veterans did not deserve to have America's opposition to the war transmitted onto them when they returned from their service.
