IOC picks Beijing as Winter 2022 host

Dogged by a series of hiccups in the Olympic bidding process, the IOC opts for the stability Beijing's Olympic past to host the games once more in 2022. Gavino Garay reports.

It was a close run thing, but with a vote of 44 to 40, the IOC chose Beijing to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, over Almaty, Kazakhstan. Committee officials say the decision was based largely on the success of Beijing's summer games in 2008 and a sense of confidence that the city would be able to pull it off again. It's another public relations victory for the Chinese, But in Almaty, where hopes were high...bitter disappointment for those who'd turned out to watch. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) ALMATY RESIDENT, AIBEK, SAYING: "Until the very last moment I was hoping our city would win." But hosting the games will come at great cost for Beijing. Four of six 2022 Winter Games bidders dropped out of the race, party put off by the $51 billion price tag for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. China is confident though, that it can follow through on its commitments to provide an iconic winter setting for the games...as the world turns its focus to Beijing once again.
