Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem met with his Iranian counterpart, Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, in Tehran on Tuesday. The two were expected to discuss efforts to end the civil war in Syria, focusing on the fight against Islamic State militants. Iran has stood by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad throughout the conflict, providing military and financial support during more than four years of fighting. Syrian state TV quoted Moualem as saying that Syria supports any efforts to combat the Islamic State provided they're coordinated with Damascus. Anything else, he said, would be a "breach" of Syrian sovereignty. The meeting comes as the United States said this week it will allow air strikes to defend Syrian rebels trained by the U.S. military from any attackers... including the Syrian army.
