Virtual reality takes games to new level

Once synonymous with clunky headgear, virtual reality is fast becoming the hot topic of gaming's next generation, and as Joel Flynn reports, the world's biggest manufacturers are all vying to capitalise on the burgeoning market.

Cologne, Germany - the home of the world's biggest games event. Nearly 350,000 visitors and over 600 exhibitors come to Gamescom to see the next generation of computer entertainment. But where just a few years ago they would've looked to the screens for the future - now they're inside them. Virtual reality is coming, say gaming experts - and it will be a revolution. Guido Alt is from Sony. SOUNDBITE: Sony Germany Spokesman, Guido Alt, saying (German): "If I'm playing a racing game I can look around inside the car, I can look at the wing mirror - all these things were not possible in games until now; you're completely in the game's situation." Sony is showcasing's its Project Morpheus Playstation 4 equipment, which has been three years in the making. Microsoft too is readying it's Hololens, while even Facebook's involved, with its tie in with Oculus Rift - one of the most exciting VR prospects. But it's not just hardware that's stealing attention. The next generation of games are on show here too. And industry insider Maximilian Schenk says they will make all the difference. SOUNDBITE: Federation Of Interactive Entertainment Software (BIU) Managing Director, Maximilian Schenk, saying (German): "These are games made specifically for the next generation of consoles. Developers were able to completely focus on those consoles and make the best of them - which means the games look fantastic." Next gen titles in the non-VR world are still making a stir. The latest instalment in the Assassin's Creed saga inspiring some to come in costume. That also includes the latest Star Wars outings - due in time for the new movie's release in December.
