Syrian officials say Khaled Asaad worked for more than 50 years doing what he loved. And that was protecting the historical and cultural treasures of the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra. However, his life came to an end Tuesday, when officials say he was executed by Islamic State. IS reportedly left his body hanging from a column in the city's main square. The Sunni militant group captured Palmyra in May, raising its black flag over the city. Asaad had worked with U.S., French, German and Swiss archeological missions in the city, doing what he could to leave the city's history intact for future generations.
