For police, it was a gruesome discovery. As many as 50 refugees found dead inside a truck near the Hungarian border. Authorities say it may have been parked there since Wednesday. Police couldn't immediately say just how many victims were inside -- 20, 40, maybe 50, they said -- their bodies had already started to decompose. (SOUNDBITE) (English) HELMUT MARBAN, PRESS OFFICER, BURGENLAND PROVINCE POLICE SAYING: "They thought it was damaged at first, the first time, and then they checked the car, and they found blood dropping out of the car. It smelled." They were SO close to Germany, their presumed destination, with only Austria still to cross. German Chancellor Angela Merkel says the discovery has shaken European leaders ... just as they meet to discuss the migrant crisis at a Balkans summit. German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere: (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN INTERIOR MINISTER, THOMAS DE MAIZIERE, SAYING: "My Austrian colleague has announced tighter checks, which I consider to be the right step. The people who are squeezing 20 to 30 people, including pregnant women and small children, into vehicles designed for 8 to 10 people, are criminals." Investigations are underway in Austria and Hungary. Austrian Chancellor Werner Feymann says Europe must fight human traffickers. But calls to do more have had little impact so far...as every day, thousands of refugees embark on their dangerous journey in search of a better life.
