ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appealed to world leaders on Friday (August 28) to do more to solve the ongoing migrants crisis in Europe. "I'm horrified and heartbroken as refugees and migrants are losing their lives in the Mediterranean, Europe, and beyond. We have seen countless tragedies, most recently the grim discovery of more 70 people who suffocated inside a truck in Austria," Ban said. On Thursday, an Austrian motorway patrol discovered the abandoned truck near the Hungarian border, probably at least 24 hours after it had been parked there. The refugees appeared to have been dead for up to two days and fluids from the decomposing bodies were seeping from its door. The deaths were just the latest in what has been a deadly year for migrants fleeing regions plagued by war and poverty. More than 2,600 have drowned this year crossing the Mediterranean Sea while trying to reach Europe. "We must understand why people are risking their lives. They are fleeing war, political instability, and insecurity to seek a better future. Our first priority must be saving lives and providing humanitarian assistance," Ban said. He also appealed to governments "to expand safe and legal channels of migration."
