Warm welcome for migrants in Germany

Thousands of exhausted migrants set foot in Germany, concluding a treacherous journey from Hungary via Austria. Gavino Garay reports.

For these migrants walking from Budapest into Austria, their journey is just beginning. Many of them are fleeing Syria's civil war, and moving north and west in search of better, more prosperous lives. For many others still, their destination is here in Germany, where the borders have been opened to asylum seekers. Officials say as many as 10,000 could arrive by the end of Saturday alone. In Munich, Bavarian Social Minister Emilia Mueller. (SOUNDBITE) (German) BAVARIAN SOCIAL MINISTER EMILIA MUELLER, SAYING: "In the last 7 hours 2,000 asylum seekers arrived, you know the routes, from Hungary via Austria to here. It is all running very smoothly, in a very orderly manner, and we have had several meetings, also with the crisis management team, and the Bavarian government, together with the police and the aid organizations, are managing this in a very impressive way ." With the help of Arabic interpreters, the migrants are screened, fed and clothed at emergency registration tents. Most will stay in Munich, although more trains are scheduled to take hundreds to Dortmund and Frankfurt. At the border with Austria, officials say the stream of people entering has slowed for now... But at the train station in Budapest, the numbers are picking up again -- a sign of the unrelenting human surge, in what has been described as Europe's most acute refugee crisis since the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s.
