ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Video released by Defense Video & Imagery Distribution System on Sunday showed a platoon live-fire training exercise led by a U.S. Army paratrooper in Yavoriv, Ukraine. According to DVIDS, the training concluded on Friday is the last step in the first part of the 'Fearless Guardian' training exercise. "Today we have observed the NGU (Ukrainian National Guard) conducting platoon attack under live fire conditions. They integrated mortars and machine guns, they set the conditions before they moved. This is our last step before the culminating exercise of Fearless Guardian Two," U.S. Army paratrooper Lieutenant Colonel Michael Kloepper, who monitored the exercise, said. "Given the scale of their national mission and what their government asks of them, Fearless Guardian has been in my assessment a positive experience for them and for us," Kloepper added. Paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade are in Ukraine for the second of several planned rotations to train Ukraine's newly-formed national guard as part of Fearless Guardian. More than 6,500 people have been killed in the east since pro-Russian separatists rebelled against the Kiev government after Russia annexed Crimea in response to the ousting of a Moscow-backed president by street protests and his replacement by a pro-Western leadership.
