With Hungary sealing shut its southern frontier along Serbia overnight... migrants find other ways to get in. Large groups are looking for illegal routes across the Serbia-Hungary border... anything to get into Europe's largely open Schengen zone, before making their way to more welcoming nations like Germany or Austria. It's not going to be easy. Overnight, tough new rules came into effect in Hungary allowing authorities to arrest, jail and deport migrants caught crossing the border illegally. Punitive laws that the U.N. Refugee office calls "alarming". This Afghan family is among crowds of migrants who've realized their harrowing journey could be coming to an early end. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNNAMED AFGHAN MIGRANT, SAYING: "They say that the border is closed, the border is closed, nothing else." JOURNALIST ASKING: "So what you will do?" "I don't know, what shall we do? If we go back we will die, it is very far from here that we are coming from." If they'd arrived by midnight, they could have joined hundreds of migrants who'd beaten the deadline to cross. But now this razor wire fence -- hastily erected by a right-wing government -- runs along almost the entire length of the EU's external border with Serbia. The migrants stuck in this limbo can go west into Croatia... or east to Romania, both part of the EU. But neither is inside the Schengen zone … the only place that can offer them safe passage to refuge.
