After a chaotic day at Umpqua Community College, the local sheriff confirmed ten were killed and seven injured after a gunman opened fire on the campus south of Portland. He was eventually shot to death by police. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DOUGLAS COUNTY SHERIFF JOHN HANLIN SAYING: "The law enforcement investigation into the shooter and his motives is ongoing. We are not ready at this time to make any comments about him." Students described a terrifying scene as they hid during a lockdown. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNNAMED STUDENT SAYING: "We just knew shooter, lockdown and we all gathered in a small area not reachable by the windows to keep us safe from the shooter." And the college's interim president called this the saddest day in college's history. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UMPQUA COMMUNITY COLLEGE INTERIM PRESIDENT DR. RITA CAVIN SAYING: "We have families waiting for the last bus to arrive with students on it and we have grief counselors for those parents who have no children coming off this bus. // I feel awful. To witness the families that were waiting for the students on the last bus and to see all the hugs and weeping and trauma that has gone on. More people were hurt than just the ones that were shot." President Barack Obama weighed in from the White House, saying the U.S. is the only country on earth with mass shootings every couple of months. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "Somehow this has become routine//we've become numb to this." The community college will be closed until Monday while the investigation proceeds.
