Guatemala landslide sparks frantic search

Rescuers in Guatemala are in a race against time to find hundreds of people missing after a landslide engulfed their homes. Rough cut (no reporter narration).

ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION The death toll from a landslide in Guatemala on Thursday (October 01) night has risen to at least 26 people with hundreds more believed to be missing, officials reported. As many as 600 people in Santa Catarina Pinula on the south-eastern flank of Guatemala City are missing and dozens feared dead after a after a hillside buried homes in earth and sludge and sparking a desperate hunt for survivors on Friday (October 02). President Alejandro Maldonado told media attention has now turned to finding survivors. Survivors have been moved to an emergency shelter where they are receiving food and emergency supplies. The landslide was one of the worst in recent memory in the impoverished Central American country. An aerial video from Guatemalan disaster agency showed the tree-lined hillside laid bare above earth, foliage and debris covering part of the town, which hugs the side of a river in a deep ravine.
