INTRO: Toyota Motor Corp unveils car that can autonomously change lanes, merge with traffic, and overtake other vehicles on highways. Jim Drury reports. STORY: Toyota's Highway Teammate isn't going on sale....it's a statement of intent from the Japanese auto-maker. The modified Lexus GS, that went on display in Tokyo, is a semi-autonomous prototype. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) SENIOR MANAGING OFFICER OF TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION, MORITAKA YOSHIDA, SAYING: "There are times when the car will watch over the driver, and other times when the car will help the driver out. Our concept is about partnership between driver and car, where both parties understand each other." By 2020 the company wants to give its drivers the option to turn an auto-pilot mode on and off by switch. It also wants its cars to autonomously change lanes, merge with traffic, and overtake other vehicles. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) SENIOR MANAGING OFFICER OF TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION, MORITAKA YOSHIDA, SAYING: "Almost everything that a driver is meant to do on a highway, will be accomplished by auto-pilot." Toyota will launch three models this year equipped with 'intelligent transportation system' technology. This allows vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication to alert drivers to potential dangers using sensor technology.
