ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said on Tuesday (October 13) that she would make it clear to Russian President Vladimir Putin that his country's recent actions in Syria are "not acceptable". The Russians began assisting the Syrian government, its longtime ally, last month by conducting air strikes in the country against what it says are militants of Islamic State. But Washington has said Moscow's campaign has mainly targeted other insurgent groups including those that have fought Islamic State. Russia has denied the allegation. "I think it's important that the U.S. make it clear that it's not acceptable for him to be in Syria, bombing people on behalf of Assad," Clinton said, referring to President Bashar al-Assad. Clinton said that the U.S. has to take a greater leadership role in the region to bring the Russians to the table to help create safe zones in Syria and eventually find a peaceful solution to the conflict.
