ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) About a thousand migrants were dropped off by train at the Croatian border village of Botovo on Friday (October 16) evening, less than an hour before Hungary closed its border to stem the flow of people into the country. The migrants - mostly Syrians escaping the civil war - were brought to the border from a registration centre in eastern Croatia. They immediately resumed their journey on foot, hurrying to cross into Hungary before it shut off its frontier on Friday at midnight (2200GMT). Earlier on Friday, Hungary announced it would close its southern border with Croatia, pressing ahead with a unilateral crackdown on the flow of people to a Europe still divided over how to handle them. The move came a month after Hungary's right-wing government had already closed its frontier with Serbia to hundreds of thousands of migrants streaming across the Balkans, blocking their path north and redirecting the flow of people towards neighbouring Croatia. Croatia in turn said it couldn't cope with the huge numbers of migrants and decided to transport them to its own border with Hungary, which bused them to the Austrian border. The flow of people continued unabated on Friday, with anywhere between 5,000 and 8,000 people travelling the Balkan route every day in recent weeks. With winter approaching and temperatures dropping, they now face being diverted from Croatia into Slovenia, a member of Europe's Schengen zone of passport-free travel, like Hungary. Slovenia said it would not restrict entry providing Germany - the preferred destination for the vast majority of migrants - keeps its doors open.
