Rep. Paul Ryan is spending the weekend at home in Wisconsin, as members of the U.S. House of Representatives prepare to vote for a new Speaker. If all goes as expected next week, the 2012 Republican vice-presidential nominee will replace John Boehner as House speaker, after Boehner resigned in September. Last week, Ryan told colleagues he'd like to take the party in a very different direction. SOUNDBITE: REP. PAUL RYAN SAYING: "We have become the problem. If my colleagues entrust me to be speaker, I want us to become the solution." Ryan is the only candidate in the race, as he tries to unify a bitterly divided Republican party. He agreed to run after meeting with the conservative Freedom Caucus and laying out certain conditions. While he won the support of some Cuacus members, it was not enough to win the group's endorsement. SOUNDBITE: REP. RAUL LABRADOR, LEADING MEMBER OF THE FREEDOM CAUCUS, SAYING: "There was not an agreement on the preconditions. We're going to continue to work to change what's happening in the House." Ryan revealed a bold to-do list when he agreed to run for House Speaker. But to carry it out he'll need a level of compromise and cohesion that's been sorely lacking on Capitol Hill.
