China's C919 finally rolls out

China unveils its first home-made passenger jet the C919 after years of delays, to take on global aviation giants Airbus and Boeing. Meg Teckman reports.

The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China - or COMAC - unveiling the C919 passenger jet in Shanghai on Monday (November 2). This narrow-body jet is seen as direct competition to rival models the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. COMAC has been developing the C919 project since 2008 and has already said it received over 500 orders for the first model, mainly by domestic carriers. China has recently gone on an air travel boom with the rising middle class able to afford more flights within China and for overseas trips. And rising passenger volumes have meant more airports, more flight routes, and now, demand for more planes. Ground tests for the C919 are set to start soon before the maiden flight in 2016. ENDS
