Tattoos are about to go upscale. More than 1,000 works created by celebrated tattoo artists are set to hit the auction block for the first time in New York. The collection was amassed by Peter Mui, founder of the tattoo clothing line Yellowman. Arlan Ettinger, of auction house Guernsey's says that this sale shows that tattoos' beauty is not just skin-deep. SOUNDBITE: Arlan Ettinger, President of Guernsey's, saying (English) "What these are, are original paintings and in some cases drawings on illustration board, art board, canvas, occasional paper by the artist using the same style and look as they would apply it to one's body." The auction will feature works by the most famous body artists, including Horiyoshi III who honed his inking skills working for, or on the Japanese mafia. Artist Bob Roberts creates classic American tattoos. Because there is no precedent Ettinger says the price range is anywhere from $500-30,000 dollars. SOUNDBITE: Arlan Ettinger, President of Guernsey's, saying (English) "In a way your guess is sort of as good as ours in trying to figure out what will a work like this sale for. All we can do is look at the reputation of the artist." The two-day sale will take place on November 13 and 14 in Manhattan's meatpacking district and online.
