ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Stars of "In the Heart of the Sea" walked the blue carpet in London for the movie's European premiere on Wednesday (December 2). Directed by Oscar-winner Ron Howard ("A Beautiful Mind"), the action-adventure is based on Nathaniel Philbrick's non-fiction book of the same name, which tells the story of the sinking of the "Essex", the American whaling ship that inspired Herman Melville's "Moby Dick". During the ship's voyage the vessel was struck by a sperm whale, leaving the crew shipwrecked at sea for 90 days. The cast - including Chris Hemsworth as the vessel's first mate, Tom Holland as young seaman Thomas Nickerson, and Benjamin Walker as its inexperienced Captain - were all therefore required to lose significant amounts of weight to demonstrate the starvation the crew endured. Hemsworth, known for playing Thor and his muscular physique, posted a photo of his emaciated body on his Instagram account last week, prompting the picture to 'go viral'. He explained that the photo was a means of showing a frame of the film, what the cast were going through and the hard work getting down to that weight was for them all. 19-year-old British actor Tom Holland added that the experience of shooting the movie on the whole was "pretty tough" but that the important thing was to give an authentic performance, given that the story is true and about real people. "In the Heart of the Sea" is released in the U.S. on December 11 and in the UK on December 26, but is starting its international theatrical rollout as early as December 3.
