A new tunnel from Mexico to the U.S. is helping travellers get from one country to the other in a matter of minutes. This is the Cross Border Xpress... a terminal building on the San Diego side of the U.S. - Mexico border which is connected to the Tijuana International Airport via a pedestrian bridge. Elizabeth Brown is the Chief Commercial Officer for the project and explains how it works. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ELIZABETH BROWN, CHIEF COMMERCIAL OFFICER FOR CROSS BORDER XPRESS (CBX), SAYING: "...what we are is basically a terminal building, just like an airport terminal but our runways are in Mexico. (cutaway) Tijuana international airport is immediately on the other side and we have a raised pedestrian crossway that is 390 feet long that connects this building physically to the Tijuana international airport terminal building and we've built this to facilitate passengers who are flying out of the Tijuana International Airport so they can cross the border in an easy and efficient manner to get to their flights departing out of Tijuana." According to Cross Border Xpress's website, travellers who would often experience long delays at one of the other two congested ports of entry can now enter the U.S. in a matter of minutes. It's very good, said this man. We arrived, and in 20 minutes were are already here. The tunnel is free until December 18th. After that passengers will be required to pay an $18 dollar fee. According to the Los Angeles Times, the $120 million dollar privately funded project is geared towards boosting tourism and commerce after years of economic decline.
