North Korean pop band cancels China concert

Members of North Korean pop group, The Moranbong Band, abruptly leave China before a scheduled gig. Francis Maguire reports.

They're one of the most popular bands in North Korea, And The Moranbong Band were due to show off their music in China as part of a cultural exchange. But the group abruptly cancelled their Saturday show and left for home. There's been no confirmation as to why the band pulled out, although Chinese officials say there were "communication issues at the working level". Despite the band's cancellation China says it will continue to push for better relations with its historical ally: (Soundbite) (Mandarin) Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman,Hong Lei, saying (Mandarin) : "China pays great attention to cultural exchanges with North Korea and is willing, along with North Korea, to keeping pushing cooperation forward on all levels." The Moranbong Band was put together by North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un in 2012. And their concert in Beijing would have been their first foreign performance - a positive step in Chinese relations with the North which have been strained by a nuclear test in 2013. Those who had tickets to see a potentially historic moment will just have to keep on waiting to see if cultural exchanges do indeed continue.
