ROUGH CUT - SUBTITLED (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Chancellor Angela Merkel told a congress of her conservative Christians Democrats (CDU) on Monday (December 14) that multiculturalism in Germany remained a "lie." Her comments came as part of a 70-minute long speech in the southwestern city of Karlsruhe, dominated by Europe's refugee crisis and the influx of migrants to Germany. "Those fleeing from war and persecution will find protection with us," Merkel said. "Those who found refuge and protection with us must obey our laws, values and traditions and in order to understand us, they must learn the German language." Merkel said it was all about "integration". "All this is the exact opposite of multiculti (multiculturalism). It remains true that multiculturalism leads to parallel societies and multiculturalism therefore remains a lie." More than five years ago, Merkel told a meeting of young members of her CDU that "this (multicultural) approach has failed, utterly failed." In October 2010, Merkel said that allowing people of different cultural backgrounds to live side by side without integrating had not worked in a country that is home to some four million Muslims.
