Lebanese militant leader Samir Qantar has been killed in an Israeli strike on a building in Damascus, the Lebanese Shi'ite Group, Hezbollah has said. An Israeli cabinet minister has welcomed Qantar's killing, though stopping short of confirming allegations it was responsible. Qantar is reviled in Israel for a 1979 attack that killed four people. Israel freed Qantar in 2008 as part of a prisoner swap with Hezbollah. Qantar is since believed to have become a senior figure in the group. Hezbollah has sent hundreds of its members to fight alongside forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Syria's state media has blamed "terrorist groups" for the attack. Syrian government loyalists blamed Israel. The National Defence Forces, part of a group of loyalist Syrian militia, have said on Facebook "two Israeli warplanes carried out the raid" and "struck [the area] with four long range missiles".
