Carpooling for Google and Ford. According to Automotive News, the two companies are in talks to build Google's self-driving car. Few details are known about the collaboration, but a source says both parties have been negotiating on a contract manufacturing deal "for a long time." Officials at Google and Ford were unavailable for comment. But executives at the search engine company confirmed that they are talking to automakers and hope to bring self-driving cars to the market by 2020. And earlier this month, Ford said it received permission to test its own autonomous cars in California. Adding fuel to the reports - Google has added two former Ford executives to its leadership team. Former CEO Alan Mulally joined Google's board of directors last year, and former engineer John Krafcik became the CEO of Google's Self-Driving Car Project. KBB.com managing editor Matt DeLorenzo thinks Google with benefit more than Ford, saying: "With a partner like Ford, they will have access to the means of production for an automobile. On the flip side, Ford gets access to a respected tech partner." Ford's stock sprinted higher on the news. Alphabet's shares rose modestly. If the deal is finalized, it's expected to come together in time for the annual International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas where Ford is scheduled to hold a press conference January 5th.
