Hitler's "Mein Kampf" to be published in Germany

Adolph Hitler's book, ''Mein Kampf,'' will be published in Germany next month, for the first time in 70 years, but with critical commentary. Diane Hodges reports.

EDITORS PLEASE NOTE - RESENDING SCRIPT TO CORRECT TYPO IN INTRO For the first time in 70 years, Germany is publishing Adolph Hitler's political treatise "Mein Kampf." The Bavarian government has held the copyright to the work, but that expires at the end of the year. Munich's Institute for Contemporary History plans to begin selling copies. Germany's Justice Minister, Heiko Maas, says officials can do little stop them. (SOUNDBITE)(German) GERMAN JUSTICE MINISTER, HEIKO MAAS, SAYING: "It's not easy to ban this for copyright reasons. However, anything that seems to be a hate crime can be pursued. Criminal offenses related to hate crime will be very systematically pursued in the future." The new edition will include thousands of critical comments, and a survey shows 51 percent of Germans are in favor of lifting the ban. But Jewish leaders fear that it will inflame racist sentiments in Germany.
