ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: THIS EDIT CONTAINS PROFANITY The 27th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival was officially the first celebrity event of the year on Saturday (December 2) with many of what are expected to be the main players in award season gracing the red carpet at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Eleven awards were given out during the evening and they were all announced beforehand, so there were no surprises on the evening. Alicia Vikander won the Rising Star Award, Tom McCarthy won the Visionary Award for 'Spotlight', Brie Larson won the Breakthrough Performance Award for 'Room', Roony Mara won the Spotlight Award for 'Carol', and Bryan Cranston won the Spotlight Award. Michael Fassbender spoke to co-star from 'Steve Jobs' Kate Winslet when he arrived on stage to receive the International Star Award, revealing at the podium that Winslet had instructed him not to mess up the speech. Irish actress Saoirse Ronan won the International Star Award, but also presented Cate Blanchett with the Desert Palm Achievement Award. Johnny Depp won the Desert Palm Achievement Award and joked with the audience about making his speech longer than the other winners. Matt Damon won the Chairman's Award - the final award of the evening - and used the opportunity to canvas for his 'The Martian' director Ridley Scott to finally win an Academy Award.
