ROUGH CUT - SUBTITLED (NO REPORTER NARRATION). It is the first work day of 2016 in Japan. Hundreds of business people and workers are lining up to pray for luck and success in the new year. (SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) MANUFACTURING COMPANY EMPLOYEE, SHIGEAKI NAGASHIMA, SAYING: "I just prayed that I don't get injured as I do physical labour. I also hope the company won't go bankrupt." The 1,300-year-old Kanda Shrine is popular among business people. It is dedicated to two of the Seven Gods of Fortune. (SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) COMPANY DIRECTOR, YOSHIYUKI OHIRA, SAYING: "This shrine is known as the god of business, so I prayed that the company will develop more and more." Many buy white fortune papers and tie them to a heart-shaped monument. Others drop coins. Japan has suffered under a decade-long cycle of weak growth and deflation.
