The 2016 award season begins at Palm Springs

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: THIS EDIT CONTAINS FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY The 27th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival was officially the first celebrity event of the year with many of what are expected to be the main players in award season gracing the red carpet at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Saturday (January 2). Eleven awards are given out during the evening and they are all announced beforehand, which was a relief for many of the guests. Film 'The Big Short' won the Ensemble Performance Award and many of the cast including Christian Bale and Steve Carell attended the festival opening. Kate Blanchett won Desert Palm Achievement Award (Actress), Alicia Vikander won the Rising Star Award, Tom McCarthy won the Visionary Award for 'Spotlight', Roony Mara won the Spotlight Award (Actress) for 'Carol', Michael Fassbender won the International Star Award (Actor) for 'Steve Jobs', Bryan Cranston won the Spotlight Award (Actor), Johnny Depp won the Desert Palm Achievement Award and Matt Damon won the Chairman's Award for his role in 'The Martian'.
