It's been raining cats and dogs in Southern California thanks to an El Nino-strengthened storm system. And the floods have reached this San Diego Humane Society, setting contingency plans in motion. (SOUNDBITE) SAN DIEGO HUMANE SOCIETY PRESIDENT, GARY WEITZMAN, SAYING: "We had everything in line but of course as soon as it happens, then you have to scramble and actually do it." Outside their main location, 25-pound bags of kitty litter were ironically used in place of sandbags. Employees say their number one priority was the animals' welfare. Some were placed in temporary foster care and others were moved to higher ground within some facilities. (SOUNDBITE) SAN DIEGO HUMANE SOCIETY PRESIDENT, GARY WEITZMAN, SAYING: "We know that this is going to go on for the next couple months -- so with every storm we experience it's like a dress rehearsal for the next one - so we are not going to let our guard down until well in to March and April 7." The floods are widespread in Southern California, like in Silverado Canyon... where water is moving fast next to property charred by a 2014 wildfire. (SOUNDBITE) SILVERADO CANYON RESIDENT DOYAL TEEL, SAYING: "There's a rock slide over here and we've been worrying about that to see how that's been going. There's another rock slide over there and then there's the creek. (Edit) It's not water, its muddy water. And that worries us, from all the runoff from the fire." Landslides ARE a reality... officials say slides sent mud onto a Freeway in Ventura County. And a mudflow in Santa Clarita has forced evacuations. With more rain expected this week, California residents -- and their pets -- are bracing for even greater impact.
