Iranian sailors of Dubai Creek welcome lifting of sanctions

Iranian sailors who trade foreign goods between Dubai and Iran hail the lifting of sanctions on the Islamic Republic, saying it will bring greater economic prosperity to the region. Mana Rabiee reports.

News about the lifting of Iran sanctions is reverberating across the globe, is s about to felt here first-hand, on Dubai Creek, with the modern skyline of Dubai in the backdrop. Some 24,000 traditional boats ferry goods between Dubai and Iran along this historic waterway. Most of the sailors and captains who run the boats are Iranian, and welcome the prospect of increased economic prosperity to the region. (SOUNDBITE) (Farsi) HOSSEIN JAAFARI, IRANIAN TRADER SAYING: "We had a problem with sanctions. We traded less, our imports and exports were down. With the lifting of sanctions our trade will gradually increase." (SOUNDBITE) (Farsi) HOSSEIN DARVISHI, IRANIAN TRADER SAYING: "We hope things get better, there's more active trade. People can move freely and make money." Tens of billions of dollars of Iranian assets are about to be unfrozen and global companies will be able to do business with Iran. The sailors of Dubai Creek are hoping they, too, will catch a share of that economic activity, as they pass on a century-old tradition to the next generation.
