The flow of migrants arriving on the Greek mainland continues unabated, despite shipwrecks in the Aegean Sea which have claimed more than 100 lives in the last two weeks. The latest arrivals who had been stranded on the islands of Lesbos and Chios disembarked Monday at the port of Pireas near Athens. They join thousands more who arrived in recent days. Volunteers handed them water, fruit and warm soup before they crowded onto buses bound for the Greek border with Macedonia. Thousands of migrants fleeing conflict zones in the Middle East have attempted the precarious journey across the Aegean sea. January is usually a slow month for this kind of migration due to bad weather. But the International Organization for Migration says about 37-thousand migrants arrived in Europe by sea in January this year.
