ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush turned philosophical at a campaign event in Beaufort, South Carolina on Wednesday, telling the audience, "there is no free lunch," and warning that lottery winners are often "miserable." "Most of them just end up doing really bad things drinking and going crazy because ...it isn't earned," he said. Bush was responding to a woman in the audience who asked what she should tell her 18-year old son who wants free college, free medicare and "is going the other way." Bush's first response was, "He needs an economics course is what he needs." "Working gives you happiness, winning the lottery is the opposite right? You win the lottery and the studies show that the people are completely miserable" he said. "The chances of having a happy life after you won a massive amount of money in the lottery is just...the data is extraordinary," he said. "Most of them just end up doing really bad things drinking and going crazy because ...it isn't earned," he explained. "And I think young people when they get into that first chance to earn their success, a lot of this free this, free that kind of subsides," he said. "There is no free college," he explained. "Free college means you all are going to pay for all of the free stuff that came before you...there is no free lunch, there is no free anything," he said. "And the more we reject that notion, and create a different alternative, the better off we are," he said. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is pitching a scheme to make public colleges and universities tuition-free. Bush has predicted a good showing on Saturday, recently telling a crowd that "Saturday is going to be a surprise." Recent polls show Donald Trump winning in South Carolina and Bush coming in fourth.
