Can mobile tech help Greek recovery?

Greece's mobile technology sector is thriving, according to an industry organisation, in spite of the country's economic woes. As Grace Pascoe reports 75 Greek mobile and App companies are exhibiting at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

It's waterproof and shatterproof and costs just 299 euros. Crypto is also Made in Greece - by one the many tech firms the country is pinning its revival on. (SOUNDBITE) (English) Crypto, Managing Director, George Kountouriotis, SAYING: "We are trying to build premium smart phones at very competitive prices." 75 Greek mobile and App companies are exhibiting together at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Yiannis Kotsis-Giannarakis represents the industry in Greece. (SOUNDBITE) (English) HAMAC (HELLENIC ASSOCIATION OF MOBILE APPLICATION COMPANIES), GENERAL MANAGER, YIANNIS KOTSIS-GIANNARAKIS, SAYING: "Many young Greek companies they took the wave of mobile technology and the mobile industry in general and they found a way to widen their audience and their market outside the Greek borders." The Viva Wallet is another Greek success story - the mobile App is an alternative to cash payments. That's been very useful during a debt crisis, says its Chief Investment Officer Makis Antypas (SOUNDBITE) (English) VIVA PAYMENTS, CIO, MAKIS ANTYPAS, SAYING: "People could only withdraw 60 euros per day from an ATM. So merchants turned to Viva in order to get POS and mobile POS solutions in order to accept card payments. There was very few merchants in Greece were able to accept card payments before the capital controls so this opened the market for us." It isn't challenging the silicon valley yet. But it is one of the few sectors in Greece still hiring - and that's welcome news in a country where one in four is out of work.
