It looks and tastes just like meat. But this is in fact a mixture of oats and beans. Created by Finnish food technology start-up Gold & Green Foods, they call call it "pulled oats". The makers believe it could be the perfect food for vegetarians or those looking to cut their meat consumption. (SOUNDBITE)(English) FOOD SCIENTIST AND GOLD & GREEN FOODS FOUNDER, REETTA KIVELA, SAYING: "The oats are there because there is nothing bad in oats, you can't find anything in it, it's ecological and it's not allergic to anyone. And why did we come up with beans as well, it's because they balance each other, the amino acids that lack from oats they are present in beans, so they are a good couple so to say." Protein-packed meat substitutes such as Quorn have been widely embraced by consumers. But nutritionists say pulled oats could have added health benefits over food made from just wheat, soy and other beans. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MIGUEL TORIBIO-MATEAS, CHAIRMAN OF THE BRITISH ASSOCIATION FOR APPLIED NUTRITION AND NUTRITIONAL THERAPY (BANT), SAYING: "So when you compare Quorn with this product, they have got a full amino acid range; the protein quality is going to be comparable. It's more about the micro-nutrients and phytonutrients - so nutrients from plant origin - that may be in this product that may not be in Quorn. So it's not so much about the actual protein quality which will be pretty much the same, it's about the fact that beta-glucans will make it a little bit special." At this restaurant in Helsinki, the pulled oat delicacies on offer received good reviews from diners. (SOUNDBITE)(English) KATJA, LUNCH CUSTOMER, WHO ATE A PULLED OAT BURGER, SAYING: "I think the pulled oat was a very pleasant surprise, it tasted very good, I like the taste." Gold & Green raised 300,000 euros last year and hope to have pulled oat products in stores in Finland and Sweden by the end of the year.
