Donald Trump takes the stage in Portland, Maine amid open warfare in the Republican party. His target -- Mitt Romney -- the last presidential nominee of the Republican party -- and the man Trump backed in the last election. (SOUNDBITE) (English) REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE DONALD TRUMP SAYING: "He was begging for my endorsement, I could have said Mitt drop to your knees he would have dropped to his knees, he was begging." Earlier Romney -- reflecting fears of the so-called Republican establishment -- had unleashed a torrent of attacks on Trump. (SOUNDBITE) (English) FORMER REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE MITT ROMNEY SAYING: "Here's what I know. Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud. His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University. He's playing the American public for suckers." It wasn't always this way -- like in 2012. (SOUNDBITE) (English) REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE DONALD TRUMP SAYING: "It's my honor my real honor to endorse Mitt Romney" (SOUNDBITE) (English) FORMER REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE MITT ROMNEY SAYING: "There are some things that you just can't imagine happening in your life, this is one of them, being in Donald Trump's magnificent hotel and having his endorsement is a delight." They were friends back then...but those days are over...and Trump is firmly in the lead to win the Republican nomination -- with or without the party's blessing.
