Yahoo adds NHL Hockey stream to playbook

Yahoo, NHL enter pact to stream four live games a week. Two new board members were appointed. Bobbi Rebell reports.

Yahoo's future game plan may be a mystery, but that's not stopping the company from taking on some new teammates. The media company announcing a partnership with the National Hockey League to stream up to four games per week. Fans can watch it for free on Yahoo Sports. Yahoo has also secured deals with Major League Baseball, the Professional Golf Association and competitive gaming organizations. That's part of its strategy to bring in millennial viewers, who often don't watch TV, and to lure in the advertisers who want to reach them. Yahoo conducted its first global live stream in October of an NFL match played in London. It is moving forward on upgrading its products, announcing new iOS features for Yahoo mail, like 3D gestures and new themes. The news came on the same day two board members were appointed. The board is facing pressure from activist investors, including Starboard Value, and it is exploring the sale of Yahoo's core business, which includes sports and email. Reuters' Jonathan Weber: (SOUNDBITE) JONATHAN WEBER, REUTERS CORRESPONDENT, (ENGLISH) SAYING: "This is kind of more girding up for this kind of battle over selling the company essentially, Starboard has threatened a proxy fight, management would much prefer to work out a deal with the activist investors and so these board appointments are probably part of that." Verizon Communications and publisher Time Inc are among the companies expected to bid for Yahoo's core business. Some private equity firms are expected to team up to make offers as well.
