The U.S. has renewed sanctions on several top Venezuelan officials, and protesters here in Caracas are not happy. Leading this government-backed rally is President Nicolas Maduro. He is shouting to the crowd that Venezuela has the world's support, and that it should not be threatened by the "Yankee empire". This rally, however, lacks the passion of recent years. Maduro has failed to draw out the crowds and the enthusiasm seen during the rule of his popular predecessor, Hugo Chavez. An opposition alliance in the country is gaining momentum in its push to oust him, but Maduro says he is here to stay.
