Investigators say THIS is the USS Conestoga, missing since 1921. A US Navy tug, she was found about 30 miles west of San Francisco. The Conestoga was last seen when she left San Francisco for American Samoa with 56 officers and sailors aboard. Weather logs show that around the time of Conestoga's departure, the winds picked up and the seas were rough. A garbled radio transmission had relayed a message that the tug was battling a storm. Investigators believe that the Conestoga sank as the captain tried to reach a protected cove on Southeast Farallon Island. They say its discovery will hopefully bring closure to the families of the vessel's lost crew, as preservation efforts get underway.
