Idomeni migrants urged to move as conditions worsen

The U.N. agency for refugees is urging those camped out in Idomeni to move as conditions there worsen. But, as Nathan Frandino reports, it's not so easy for the migrants.

The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, says enough is enough. Conditions at the makeshift refugee camp at Idomeni along the closed Greek border are worsening by the day. Thousands of refugees and migrants are living in squalor... but they refuse to leave, saying they have no alternative. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNHCR PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER, LIENE VEIDE, SAYING: ''Idomeni is not an official camp from the humanitarian standards, it doesn't meet all the needs and all the... there are not... services are not well established, and it's not organised, just to say like that." Liene Veide is the public information officer for the UNHCR. She says conditions are getting dangerous. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNHCR PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER, LIENE VEIDE, SAYING: "It's also sanitation, it's water, it's food, it's medical, it's privacy." The migrants blame authorities. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) SYRIAN MIGRANT, ABIR, SAYING: "They brought us here and they closed everything for us. If you did not want us to get to Europe then why did you give us the maps? You should have sent us back immediately.'' Greece is currently working on building improved reception centers for the camp's inhabitants. But with the EU still struggling to implement a new deal with Turkey to alleviate the pressures of the migration crisis, many migrants say they are fed up, waiting for action.
