ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: During a rally with New York's Public Transit Union endorsing him, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said he would go "right over to a picket line" with striking Verizon workers, Wednesday (April 13). "The stand against the greed of Verizon who wants to take away healthcare benefits, wants to outsource jobs after making billions of profits- that's the kind of corporate greed together we're going to take on," Sanders said. Nearly 40,000 Verizon Communications Inc workers walked off the job on Wednesday in one of the largest U.S. strikes in recent years after contract talks hit an impasse. The strike was called by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers that jointly represent employees in such jobs as customer services representatives and network technicians in Verizon's traditional wireline phone operations. Also on Wednesday, Oregon Democrat Jeff Merkley endorsed Sanders for the party's presidential nomination, becoming the first member of the Senate to announce support for the fellow U.S. senator from Vermont. Merkley praised Sanders' Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, who also served in the Senate, and said he recognized Sanders has an "uphill battle" to defeat her. Clinton leads Sanders in delegate support needed to clinch the nomination ahead of the Nov. 8 election but Merkley said Sanders could still upset her.
